Don’t expect Scarlett Johansson to come back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon, at least not as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff.
Johansson played the role across multiple Marvel Studios works starting with “Iron Man 2” and ending with 2020’s “Black Widow,” while her character met her fate in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” where she sacrificed herself.
Fans have long speculated about whether or not she will return as Marvel has returned characters from the dead before, and with the multiverse shenanigans of the next two “Avengers” films it certainly seems possible.
Johansson, however, has thrown a bucket of cold water on such speculation saying the character is gone and isn’t coming back. She tells InStyle Magazine:
“Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay? They just don’t want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let her go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment.”
That doesn’t mean that Johansson is done with the MCU. For example, she is credited as an executive producer on this summer’s “Thunderbolts*” film.
The actress has also been linked to potentially returning as the Blonde Phantom for a future film or TV series, but there’s been no official movement on that project in a while. Johansson will shortly be seen in “Jurassic World Rebirth” opening in cinemas July 2nd.
