Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe have signed on for the historical epic “The Weight” which unfolds in Oregon in 1933.
Hawke will star as Samuel Murphy, a widower who is imprisoned in a labor camp run by the unscrupulous overseer Clancy (Crowe).
Murphy only wants to escape and regain custody of his daughter, Penny, but becomes entangled in Clancy’s perilous gold smuggling scheme.
He also faces threats from both the treacherous wilderness and potential betrayal within his own group. Principal photography is slated to begin in Bavaria, Germany this summer.
Padraic McKinley (“Kingdom”) will direct from an original screenplay by Shelby Gaines, Matthew Chapman, and Matthew Booi. Booi and Leo Scherman created the story.
Simon Fields, Nathan Fields, Ryan Hawke, Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo produce.
Hawke has recently shot the Lorenz Hart biopic “Blue Moon,” the horror sequel “The Black Phone 2” and the FX series “The Sensitive Kind”. Crowe has multiple projects on the way including “Nuremberg,” “Rothko,” “The Beast In Me” and “Bear Country”.
