Square Enix recenty held a financial results briefing in Japan, during which it reportedly said that Life Is Strange: Double Exposure sales bombed. The title, which released in October 2024, received mixed reviews from critics but was widely panned by the series’ fans for its handling of a fan-favorite character and underbaked plot.

Poor Life Is Strange: Double Exposure sales reportedly led to ‘large loss’

Japanese analyst Hideki Yasuda, who attended the meeting, told Kabutan.jp (via ResetEra) that Life Is Strange: Double Exposure made “a large loss.”

“Although Square Enix Dragon Quest III and Into the Legend was a huge hit, selling over two million copies, this was offset by the large losses of Life is Strange: Double Exposure, and the third quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2025 ended with a decrease in operating profit compared to the same period last year,” a translation of the report reads.

In the same briefing, Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu reportedly disclosed that former PS5 exclusive Final Fantasy XVI sold over 3.5 million units. However, there’s some debate that the analyst is quoting an older statement.

As for Life Is Strange, the reported loss doesn’t come as a surprise given fan reception. Deck Nine teased another entry towards the end of Double Exposure, but what future holds for the series is unclear.
