Sydney Sweeney is in negotiations to star in the live-action adaptation of the iconic Japanese anime and toy franchise “Gundam” movie currently in the works at Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmwo.
Details as to Sweeney’s role are under wraps. The project was first announced in 2018 with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kong: Skull Island”). Jim Mickle (“We Are What We Are,” “Sweet Tooth”) took over as director late last year.
Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the original series began in 1979 and is set in the Universal Century, an era in which people have emigrated to space colonies because of a growing population on Earth.
Those living in the colonies seek their autonomy and launch a war of independence with battles fought by piloting robots known as mobile suits. A major anime milestone, the franchise spans 83 animated series and movies while its toys generate over $600 million annually.
It’s presently unclear if the new film will tell an original story or be an adaptation of one of the prior series in the franchise. Mickle is penning the script and will produce alongside Linda Moran.
Sweeney is in high demand right now and was recently working on Apple TV series “Echo Valley,” Paul Feig’s “The Housemaid” and the untitled Christy Martin biopic. She’s currently filming “Euphoria” Season 3 and is attached to both “Scandalous!” and “The Masque of the Red Death”.
