British Airways Executive Club has quietly enabled a new way for members to earn non-flight Tier Points (nTPs) via contributions to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a part of the program “refresh” (read devaluation)—and yes, this is effectively a way to buy Tier Points using cash or Avios.

You can buy a maximum of 1,000 nTPs via this method in any membership, but remember that these New Tier Pesos are of little value compared to the OLD Tier Points.

The option is now live for some members via a new “Boost your balance” link found in your The Club profile (access here).

  • £1,000 or 125,000 Avios gets you 1,000 nTPs
  • There is a cap of 1,000 nTPs per membership year
  • Donations are routed via BA’s SAF partner Chooose

You can buy all the way up to 1K GBP worth of SAF.

If you choose to pay using Avios, you get 10,000 Avios back, effectively reducing the cost to 115,000 Avios for 1,000 nTPs, or around 0.87p per Avios (roughly 1 US cent).

Conclusion

You are essentially subsidizing what BA should be in the first place. Air France-KLM has better implemented this to be part of the ticket booking process, and their XPs still have some value, unlike these BA’s Tier Pesos.

This can make sense if you need a small number of nTPs to renew your tier or reach one, and you don’t have any travel planned before the qualification deadline.

Otherwise, buying SAF makes zero sense and is something that the airlines are legally required to and ought to do. You are essentially handing BA cash for nothing.
