A massive earthquake has hit Myanmar and Thailand (plus possibly surrounding countries) and caused severe damage to many buildings including well known hotels in Bangkok.
Many if not most high-rises, which include office buildings, apartments and hotels have shut down operations and/or evacuated residents pending a safety inspection.
The earthquake had a strength of 7.7 Magnitude and is the first of its kind in Bangkok causing such damage. Vietnam was reportedly affected as well.
As per Bloomberg (access here):

Hopefully, nobody was swimming close to the edge when the quake hit because that wouldn’t be pretty.
My condominium has also sent out a warning to residents:
I also just received an automated email from the German Embassy with some emergency advisory. I’m registered with the embassy in case of possible emergencies, accidents and (in the worth case) death. I strongly suggest checking with your own diplomatic mission if a similar system exists, just in case. You never know when living abroad, and something might happen to you.
This is a developing story and we will update with more information as it becomes public.
For any further information and emergency advice please refer to local English-speaking media which will publicize Goverment announcements and emergency responses as well as the foreign diplimatic missions in Thailand and Myanmar.
Conclusion
A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale has hit Southeast Asia and caused damages in Myanmar and Thailand. It’s likely there are fatalities as well, especially in the collapsed buildings.
Highrises were observed swaying, pools spilling over onto the street and windows were heard bursting. Scary!
We should learn more about this and possible aftershocks in the coming hours/days.
Be safe!
