Ahead of CinemaCon tomorrow, Gower Street Analytics has indicated that despite the current box-office woes in the United States, its 2025 global box office forecast has increased by a little over $1 billion.
In December last year, the company projected the worldwide box-office for 2025 to be $33 billion – that estimate has now been raised to $34.1 billion.
If accurate, that would be a 13% year-on-year hike from 2024 and a 0.5% increase from 2023, though still 13% behind the average of the three pre-pandemic years.
A big reason for the bullish reconsideration has been the outsized performance of Chinese blockbuster “Ne Zha 2” which has reached $2.1 billion in box-office gross, making it one of the highest-grossing films ever made.
China itself accounts for almost all the increase and its revised estimate will see that market finish the year at $7.6 billion – up 30% on 2024.
Sadly the U.S. domestic market estimates have shifted slightly downwards from $9.7 billion to $9.5 billion due to the lack of breakout hits so far in 2025. Still it’s up 8% on 2024 and 5% on 2023, but down 17% compared to the 2017-2019 average.
