Universal Teases “Jurassic 7,” “Wicked 2” & More

Universal Pictures had its big day at CinemaCon today, kicking off with a full screening of the live-action “How To Train Your Dragon” remake to a very positive response from exhibitors so far.

In addition, the studio confirmed a sequel to that remake is in the works and is targeting a June 11th 2027 release, even releasing a brief logo video which you can see here.

Though discussed, nothing from Steven Spielberg or Christopher Nolan’s 2026 films was revealed. Onto the rest of the presentation.

Jurassic World: Rebirth
The new trailer was shown with a heavy emphasis on the scene from the original Crichton novel as the team attempts to drift through a lagoon in a raft with a T-Rex around them.

Scarlett Johansson was on hand to express her excitement about being involved and how the new film aims to bring scares back to the franchise. She confirms chase scenes set on the ocean and was rappelling down a waterfall for one key sequence.

Wicked: For Good
Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, director Jon M. Chu, and producer Marc Platt showed up to show off a new trailer for “Wicked: For Good” with new versions of “No Good Deed” and “For Good” heard during the clip.

Footage shows Elphaba starting a revolution, Glinda’s wedding, the Wizard and Elphaba confronting each other, Fiyero assisting Elphaba, and glimpses of Dorothy on the yellow brick road (face not shown).

The Bad Guys 2
In footage screened, the bad guys are trying to live as good guys, with Sam Rockwell’s wolf now working at a bank he used to rob. That’s when The Bad Girls show up and plan a heist involving a space shuttle. Mr. Wolf agrees to work with them, but secretly aims to sabotage them and turn them in. Then comes scenes including a helicopter trying to stop a rocket ship and Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson) doing a bad Italian impersonation.

Nobody 2
The sequel sees Hutch (Bob Odenkirk) and his family going on the road and on vacation, complete with his father (Christopher Lloyd) in tow. That’s followed by scenes with Odenkirk’s character beating a carnival employee, a speedboat battle, and glimpses of Sharon Stone as the head of a drug ring who has a cop (Colin Hanks) under her thumb.

M3GAN 2.0
A full trailer for the “M3GAN” sequel aired in which Cady (Violet McGraw) and her aunt (Alison Williams) must face next-gen AI tech doll named Emilia who seeks to relentlessly improve herself. M3GAN meanwhile, who had become a Siri-esque voice in a box, is enlisted to help stop Emilia – including uttering the already immortal line “Hang on to your vaginas”. Tonally it’s much wilder than the original and even has M3GAN in a wingsuit hurtling down a canyon.

The Black Phone 2
Footage screened of the follow-up to the supernatural kidnap thriller. Mason Thames returns, his character Finney having survived to his teenage years and is now visiting a summer camp in the middle of winter. Ethan Hawke’s Grabber returns as a now undead serial killer and is seen on ice skates in one scene as he seems to be targeting Finney’s sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw).

Him
The new Jordan Peele-produced psychological horror film “Him” has set a September 19th release date. The story is set in the world of college football and follows a young player (Tyriq Withers) mentored by a legendary quarterback (Marlon Wayans). The former finds himself drawn into a sinister world of occultists and asks what he will sacrifice for fame. Justin Tipping will direct the film which opens September 19th.

The Phoenician Scheme
Wes Anderson’s espionage thriller opening late next month debuted a first-look trailer in which Benicio del Toro stars as Zsa-zsa Korda, one of the Europe’s wealthiest men who, having just survived his sixth plane crash, arranges to bestow his estate to his daughter (Mia Threapleton).

Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Hope Davis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, and Rupert Friend all appear in the clip.

Bugonia
A brief clip from the newest Lanthimos and Stone collaboration, a remake of the South Korean sci-fi comedy “Save the Green Planet,” sees Stone as a high-powered CEO kidnapped by two conspiracy-obsessed friends who believe she’s an alien intent on destroying Earth. Jesse Plemmons is seen shaving Stone’s hair in one shot. That film opens November 7th.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale
Focus Features showed off the first trailer for the last in the trilogy of “Downton Abbey” movies which takes place in 1930. Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern’s Lord and Lady Grantham are seen walking around the manor house as a title card reads “it’s time to say goodbye”. The film is slated to open in cinemas September 12th 2025.
