Richard Chamberlian, star of some of the biggest TV events of the 1980s and who has played characters ranging from adventurer Allan Quatermain to amnesiac spy Jason Bourne, has died. He was 90.
Multiple sources indicate that the three-time Golden Globe winner died of complications following a stroke on Saturday afternoon in Hawaii.
Chamberlain’s partner Martin Rabbett said in a statement: “Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us. How blessed were we to have known such an amazing and loving soul. Love never dies. And our love is under his wings lifting him to his next great adventure.”
Chamberlain broke through with NBC’s medical drama “Dr. Kildare” which ran for five seasons from 1961 to 1966. Throughout the 1970s he became known for his film work in movies like “The Towering Inferno,” “The Swarm,” “Lady Caroline Lamb,” “Julius Caesar,” “The Slipper and the Rose,” and several Alexandre Dumas adaptations starting with “The Three Musketeers”.
He led Peter Weir’s acclaimed Australian supernatural film “The Last Wave,” and was known for playing Quatermain across two films – “King Solomon’s Mines” and “Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold”.
More often though he was considered the ‘King of the Mini-Series’ across the 1980s, scoring Emmy and Golden Globe nominations and some wins for his work in “The Thorn Birds,” “Shogun,” “The Bourne Identity,” “The Count of Monte Cristo,” “Wallenberg: A Hero’s Story,” and “Centennial”.
Other TV work included “Gunsmoke,” “Riverboat,” “The Portrait of a Lady,” “Island Son,” “The Drew Carey Show,” “Chuck,” “Will & Grace,” “Hustle,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Brothers & Sisters,” “Leverage” “ThunderCats” and “Twin Peaks: The Return”.
Chamberlin also attained the rank of sergeant while stationed in post-war Korea, co-founded a Los Angeles–based theater group Company of Angels, was a frequent presence on stage, and was famously ‘outed’ by a French magazine in 1989 – though didn’t confirm he was gay until his 2003 autobiography. He and Rabbett began a long-term relationship in 1977 that ended in 2010, but the pair remained close friends after the split.
