Wet Leg previewed new album at intimate Brooklyn show (pics, review, setlist, video)

Welcome to Wet Leg 2.0. The UK band, who were a genuine sensation when they released their debut album three years ago, are currently in the US for a short promotional visit that includes some kind of announcement this afternoon (album #2 we assume), a new single, a Fallon appearance on Wednesday, and intimate NYC and LA shows.

The NYC show was Monday night and it didn’t feel like there could’ve been more people in Bushwick’s Market Hotel if they had a bulldozer, and it was made even smaller by all of Wet Leg’s equipment. The band hit the stage just after 9 PM, and long gone are the prairie dresses that characterized the band’s early rise. In is a decidedly more stylish ’90s indie rock look, with the band decked out in white. Musically though, this is still the Wet Leg that caused a stir with the inescapable “Chaise Longue” four years ago, and the set was evenly split with six new songs interspersed with first album favorites.

They opened with “catch these fists,” the new single which is getting officially released today, and Rhian Teasdale was showing off her muscles as Wet Leg took the stage. On this one, and most of the other new songs, Teasdale was in pure frontperson mode, no guitar, and really working the crowd — “catch these fists” is saucy and hooky and very much in the “we’re back” mode. That said, I liked some of the other new ones more, including “Lovestruck,” and “Beans” which to me was the most immediately catchy of the bunch. The set also included “Dragonfart,” Wet Leg’s hardest rocking song to date, and “C3PR” which closed the show.

The crowd were polite and appreciative of the new stuff but went bananas for “Chaise Longue,” “Wet Dream,” and “Angelica,” where you could feel Market Hotel’s floor bounce. It was almost too packed to dance or really get wild, though one person attempted to stage dive, which didn’t really work out so well. Fun show and bring on the second album. Check photos by Toby Tenenbaum, plus the setlist and full video of the show, below.

Opening were another young UK band, Mary in the Junkyard, who have been in the States since SXSW (they played our day party) and their charming, shambolic, and percussive brand of indie rock was a good match for Wet Leg.
