“Mickey 17” Heading For Soft $18M Debut?

Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi film “Mickey 17” is currently the talk of the Berlin Film Festival where it screened to some quite good reviews so far, though not close to the league of Bong’s Oscar-winning previous effort “Parasite”.

The reviews come as the film appeared on early box-office tracking sites and is reportedly headed for an $18 million opening weekend domestically.

That’s not a good start for the movie with a budget figure that’s seemingly quite contentious with the lowest estimate being $80 million, others as high as $150 million, and a recent report indicating the studio has pegged it at around $120 million.

The reviews should help lift those numbers, but it’s fairly clear Warners has been having difficulty marketing the film with trailers playing up the more comedic aspects.

As for the HBO limited series based on his “Parasite” film, Bong tells Deadline the project is still in the works with the writers “working very hard” on the project and adding “the writing room of that show itself can be another TV show”.

Bong is teaming up with filmmaker Adam McKay to co-executive produce the series that is an English language remake of the original but fleshes out the supporting characters more.
