Amazon Takes Creative Control Of James Bond

In news set to have massive repercussions, Amazon MGM Studios has taken full creative control of the James Bond movie franchise.

EON Productions’ Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have created a new joint venture to house the franchise’s intellectual property rights.

As part of the agreement, Wilson and Broccoli will remain co-owners of the 60-year-old property but Amazon MGM Studios will gain creative control of future productions of the franchise.

Both Wilson and Broccoli have long been gatekeepers of the franchise with studios unable to do much of anything with the property without their approval.

After reports of an impasse between themselves and Amazon over the future of the franchise, it appears both have opted to step aside. In a statement, Broccoli says:

“My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honor of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”

Wilson added he is stepping back from producing James Bond movies to focus on art and charitable projects. Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios says in a statement:

“We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication and their role in continuing the legacy of the franchise that is cherished by legions of fans worldwide. We are honored to continue this treasured heritage, and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”

The news effectively means Amazon MGM Studios has free reign to do whatever they want with the franchise going forward. Can a streaming series, movie (and spin-offs) and more be far behind?

Hot on the heels of the news, Amazon chief Jeff Bezos has asked audiences on X who they want to play James Bond next.
