Disney+ Changes Its Old Film Content Warnings

Disney has scaled back the content warnings on its classic films, the reduction coming amidst a large revamp of its DEI programs in the new Trump-era.

Back in 2019, streamers began experimenting with content disclaimers, label warnings and context panels to deal with the issues of racism, sexism, homophobia and cultural stereotypes on display in classic films like “Dumbo” and “Peter Pan”.

The previous content advisory warned that films included “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of peoples or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now.”

The new version reads “This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions”. The less aggressive language is in line with the original warnings back in 2019, warnings that were lengthened in late 2020 to the version used up until these changes.

Disney’s chief human resources officer Sonia Coleman outlined changes to the company’s DEI efforts in a memo on Tuesday.

Bob Iger, who returned as chief executive in 2022, has attempted to restore the company to its traditional roots in a bid to win back conservative viewers in the increasingly polarized modern era.
