Blomkamp To Direct New “Starship Troopers”

A few weeks back came a report indicating that a new version of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 sci-fi war satire “Starship Troopers” is in the works at Sony’s Columbia Pictures label.

That report suggested it was a remake of the film as opposed to a new adaptation of the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein.

Now, THR is reporting that “District 9” and “Chappie” filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has come on board to write and direct the new “Starship Troopers” film.

Additionally, their sources indicate it’s NOT a remake of the Verhoeven film – rather it is going back to Heinlein’s source material.

The book deals with an interstellar war between Earth and bug-like aliens, and follows the rise of a military serviceman named Johnny Rico. It also explored the concept of a heavily militarised society, one where some basic rights like voting were only available to those who serve.

The book has been quite influential but also derided with some labelling it a fascist work. Verhoeven, who grew up in an occupied country during WW2, skewered the material with his 1997 film which straight out satirised fascism in much the same way his “Robocop” satirised capitalism.

Blomkamp will also produce the new feature alongside his wife and co-writing partner Terri Tatchell. Blomkamp most recently directed “Gran Turismo” for Sony Pictures.
