Neill Blomkamp Directing New ‘Starship Troopers’ Movie!

Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 movie Starship Troopers pit a futuristic military unit up against insectoid creatures, with two live action sequels, two animated movies, and various video games following in its wake. We’ve been hearing rumblings about a new movie for several years now, and The Hollywood Reporter brings us an exciting update on that today.

According to the site, Columbia Pictures has hired Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium, Chappie, Demonic, Gran Turismo) to write and direct the new Starship Troopers movie, which will re-adapt Robert A. Heinlein’s novel rather than outright remake Paul Verhoeven’s movie. Of course, Verhoeven’s movie was also an adaptation of Heinlein’s 1959 sci-fi novel.

THR details, “Starship Troopers ostensibly told of an interstellar war between Earth and a host of bug-like aliens, and focused on a rise of a military serviceman named Johnny Rico. But the story had other things on its minds, like exploring the strengths of life in a military society and such ideas as having to perform service in order to have voting rights.”

Set in the 23rd century, Paul Verhoeven’s movie starred Caspar Van Dien as Johnny Rico, with the cast also including Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Clancy Brown, Seth Gilliam, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside. The films that followed in its wake include Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation in 2004, Starship Troopers 3: Marauder in 2008, Starship Troopers: Invasion in 2012, and Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars in 2017.
