One of the most anticipated launches of any media property this month, Marvel Studios has unleashed “Daredevil: Born Again” on Disney+ with the first two episodes now available and the remaining seven airing weekly through April.
While early reactions were gushing, as usual the reviews offer more levelheaded takes and were kept under embargo until this afternoon. Now they’re out and the results are in.
With 50 reviews counted, the show sits at 80% (7.9/10) on Rotten Tomatoes. To put that in comparison, the prior Marvel Netflix series saw scores of 99% (8.1/10) for Season 1, 81% (7.1/10) for Season 2, and 97% (8.1/10) for Season 3.
On Metacritic the show is at 71/100, compared to the original show’s 75, 68 and 71 seasonal scores. In other words, it’s about on par with the third season of the prior series so fans are likely going to love it. Here’s a sampling of reviews:
“Born Again’s most important achievement is the canny way it continues everything that worked about the original Daredevil series, with some notable improvements across the board elsewhere.” – Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence
“With a cast entirely at ease in their characters’ skins, and a darker tone, the series is a breathtaking example of what it means to revisit a known hero while offering him new reasons to fight for justice.” – Aramide Tinubu, Variety
“While Matt’s psychic turmoil is different and a little less masochistic this time around, Cox keeps it at close access to counterbalance the hero’s self-righteousness, clever attorney’s cockiness and both’s fighting prowess.” – Bob Strauss, The Wrap
“‘Born Again’ is smart, well-crafted TV and ends perfectly.” – Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist
“Cox remains a magnetic lead, although perhaps less so than D’Onofrio who, for all the points discussed here, is the main reason to watch.” – Melanie McFarland, Salon
“What saves Born Again from drudgery, though, are the same things that made Daredevil so beloved to begin with. One is D’Onofrio, who has not missed a step as Fisk.” – Angie Han, THR
“As a whole, it’s a Frankenstein monster of a season, with various parts stitched together in ungainly fashion.” – Alan Sepinwall, Rolling Stone
“The lack of narrative shaping takes away any force the themes of vigilantism might have had, reducing them to limp excuses for the sometimes stomach-turning violence.” – Mike Hale, The New York Times
The first two episodes of “Daredevil: Born Again” are up now. The rest air weekly through April 15th with a double episode also taking place on March 25th.
