Pelican discuss 10 albums that influenced their new LP ‘Flickering Resonance’

Pelican‘s new album Flickering Resonance arrives Friday (5/16) via Run For Cover, and ahead of its release, guitarists Laurent Schroeder-Lebec and Trevor de Brauw joined us on the BrooklynVegan Podcast to discuss 10 (technically 11) albums that influenced it. Though Pelican have long been grouped with metal, they came up in the musically-diverse Chicago DIY scene of the ’90s, surrounded by punk, hardcore, emo, post-hardcore, and more, and the classic albums (as well as one much more recent pick) that inspired Flickering Resonance reflect that. Their picks include Sunny Day Real Estate‘s LP2 (aka ‘Pink Album’), Fugazi‘s Red Medicine, Mineral‘s EndSerenading, Texas Is The Reason‘s Do You Know Who You Are?, Godflesh‘s Selfless, Quicksand‘s Slip, and more, and Laurent and Trevor had plenty of interesting things to say about each one. If you’re a fan of Pelican or just underground, ’90s-centric, DIY rock music in general, I recommend hearing what they had to say.

Flickering Resonance is Pelican’s first album in six years, first with Laurent back in the band in 12 years, and first for Run For Cover, following releases on Hydra Head and Southern Lord. There’s also a 7″ version of lead single “Cascading Crescent” that features a vinyl-only B-side with a vocal version of the song featuring Thursday’s Geoff Rickly, and Pelican tell us about that collaboration on the podcast episode too. Pick up the album from RFC and stream the episode on Spotify, Apple, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
