Dezeen Showroom: designer Vincent Van Duysen looked to 1950s American modernism to inform this indoor-outdoor garden room for Spanish furniture brand Kettal.
Pavilion V intendeds to create a dialogue between architecture and the natural environment through its modular structure, which is both light and visually open to the surrounding garden.
It was designed with reference to the flexibility and functionalism of open-plan 1950s American modernism, and features a modular construction made up of aluminium uprights supporting a canopy that projects outwards beyond the walls.
The area between columns can be filled with various facings including glass, louvres, curtains, solid stoneware panels and even functional elements such as cupboards, a cooker or a fireplace.
Vincent Van Duysen and Kettal designed the structure to be adaptable while always sitting harmoniously with nature, including in its choice of materials and incorporated technology.
Pavilion V is made primarily of teak wood and 75 per cent recycled aluminium, and it includes solar panels for energy self-sufficiency and a bioclimatic ceiling that can either be opened or closed depending on the climate.
