One of the more interesting reports this morning was that “Scream” star Neve Campbell has been cast as the X-Men mutant Polaris in an upcoming Marvel project.
In the comics, Polaris is the daughter of Magneto and has similar powers of controlling magnetism. She also has severe mental health issues which include, among other things, bipolar disorder which gets exacerbated by repeated episodes of brainwashing and other trauma.
The new report seemed to originate from scooper MyTimeToShineH and led to much discussion online where it seemed to be quickly accepted that the casting was for the currently in production “Avengers: Doomsday”.
Others suggested it’s for the new “X-Men” film, which “Thunderbolts*” director Jake Schreier is in early talks to direct. Many debated Campbell’s casting as the 51-year-old actress is older than the character is usually portrayed.
In the wake of all that, ComicBookMovie got in touch with its sources, who did confirm that Campbell has been cast as Polaris but claim it’s a voice role for the character in the critically acclaimed animated series “X-Men ’97”. They cite it’s for the second season, even as recordings for the third season of the series kicked off in March.
Former “X-Men ’97” showrunner Beau DeMayo then cleared things up tonight, confirming minutes ago in a post on X that the live-action report is incorrect. He confirms Neve Campbell was cast as the voice of Polaris for the second season of “X-Men ’97” and that’s it.
He adds: “She does amazing work bringing something new, and felt right to have a 90s icon pick up where Lorna’s story was left in ‘Cold Comfort.’ She’s got some thoughts on Genosha.”
So far no casting has been announced for the new live-action “X-Men” film, though several old school X-Men actors are returning for “Avengers: Doomsday” including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and James Marsden.
