Thunderbolts* Review – You Know What – It’s A Good Film

Well folks I had the chance to watch Thunderbolts* this weekend and here is my review, and it’s actually a good film. It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed a Marvel movie, because the quality has been slipping. Therefore, I have tended to just wait for the Disney+ release. Doing my job I already know most of the stories, so it’s only the ones I’m really pumped for I see at theatres. Was I really pumped for Thunderbolts*, nope. However, positive word of mouth got me to check it out.

I’m glad I did. Thunderbolts* is streets ahead of Brave New World in terms of a fun movie experience. Brave New World felt like a series oof situations set up specifically to give Captain America action scenes he could handle. Thunderbolts* feels instead like a good team building action story, set within the MCU.

Mild SPOILER Abound

I’m sure by now most LRM readers have seen it, or understand the basic premise. Val has been using the members of the team for what is effectively unsanctioned wet work. But there’s a net closing on her and her experiments with the ‘Sentry’ program. Val then decides to assign all the Thunderbolts* to kill one another. This takes place inside a vault where all the failed Sentry experiments and evidence have been moved. It’s a simple plan, they all kill off one another and then whoever survives gets cremated anyway. However, Val does not count on the team actually communicating and working this out. That in itself I thought a fun reversal of what most fans usually criticise in this type of situation, ‘if they just talked to each other’.

That’s kinda what Thunderbolts* does well. There are certain formulas and tropes we have become used to in action films and the MCU. Thunderbolts* doesn’t change the game, but it does understand what is expected and goes in other directions at times.

The cast have great chemistry together, despite clearly not even liking one another. There are some really good character arcs in the film, and some really honest self critiques. Standouts for me are Florence Pugh, who definitely leads the movie. she’s actually a far more interesting character than Black Widow ever was. Though, that’s because we were never really shown Nat’s backstory, until she was dead.

I also think David Harbour and Wyatt Russell really nail their characters. Surprisingly, I also enjoyed Ghost, who would have expected that? As for Sentry, aka Bob? Well, I really enjoyed this MCU version of Sentry. If he had the mind of Steve Rogers he’d be as OP as Superman. Yet, I have no qualms about Sentry being too OP going forward, he’s like a kid learning how to walk at this point. Lewis Pullman does a great job with a role that he plays against his, suave confident type.

If you’re looking for a genuinely fun night out at the movies and a movie you may even watch again at home for once, then you may like Thunderbolts*.

GRADE: A-

Big heart, some good humor, strong emotions, good character arcs and plenty of fun action. The best Marvel film since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for me. I’ll watch this again when it hits Disney+. I also look forward to seeing this team interact again in Avengers: Doomsday, more than I expected to.

So, there’s my Thunderbolts* review and as you can I see I think it’s a good film. What did you think of Thunderbolts*, or my review? Thoughts below.
