Muschietti To Direct Space Hostage Film “Drift”

Filmmaker Andy Muschietti (“IT,” “The Flash”) is attached to direct the grounded sci-fi mission feature “Drift” which Skydance won in a heated auction over the weekend.

The film will be based on a 38-page unpublished short story by Ben Queen & Jason Shumanv and was sold for around $2 million – a number that could go higher if it goes forward.

Andy & Barbara Muschietti’s Double Dream and Scott Glassgold’s 12:01 Films companies will produce the project, which is being dubbed “Gravity meets Arrival”.

In the film, an astronaut vanishes during a space mission. His father, a once-legendary, now fallen from grace shuttle commander, is pulled into a high-stakes hostage exchange in space to get his boy back from captors who are not from Earth.

Queen & Shuman will be adapting their own short story which was on the market for less than 24 hours before it was sold. Numerous other bids were made, but Skydance won the day with Muschietti said to be emphatic about directing.

Andy Muschietti helmed two episodes of the upcoming Max series “IT: Welcome to Derry,” and remains attached to the in development live-action adaptation of the “Attack on Titan” franchise.
