Last month came the unexpected trade report that singer Charli XCX was among the “top choices” for the high-profile role of the White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s “Chronicles of Narnia” film.
It was an eyebrow-raising choice considering the British musician’s lack of onscreen roles to date – though she has roles in multiple films all currently in post-production and many from celebrated directors like Gregg Araki, Romain Gavras, and Cathy Yan.
Now, The Insneider is reporting that Charli XCX “didn’t land the plum part after all” with Gerwig looking towards more well-known actresses for the part.
Two such people reportedly under consideration are Margaret Qualley (“The Substance,” “The Leftovers,” “Poor Things”) and Emma Mackey (“Death on the Nile,” “Sex Education,” “Barbie”). The report also says a third actress will be testing shortly, though who that is remains unclear.
The new film is believed to be an adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ fifth published but first chronological Narnia novel “The Magician’s Nephew” and is intended to kick off a new franchise for Netflix.
Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep are reportedly both being eyed for roles in the film, which is expected to begin filming this summer for a Thanksgiving 2026 release on IMAX screens.
