Istituto Europeo di Design launches Master of Arts programme in Interior and Furniture Design

Promotion: design school Istituto Europeo di Design's latest Master of Arts in Interior and Furniture Design course intends to "redefine the relationship between tradition and innovation in design".

The new Master of Arts programme in Interior and Furniture Design at the university's Florence campus in Italy explores craftsmanship and sustainability in interior and furniture design.

The course aims to broaden students' technical skills and cultural knowledge while encouraging them to acquire critical thinking techniques that respond to pressing design challenges.

The programme contains modules that combine theory and practice via workshops, field projects, company visits and real-world studies.

Istituto Europeo di Design explained that during their studies, students work directly with design studios – such as TIPSTUDIO – and the Tuscan manufacturing sector, which is known for producing marble, textiles, furniture, jewellery and leather goods.

"The course fosters deep engagement with territories, encouraging students to interact with regional resources, artisanal networks, and cultural heritage," Istituto Europeo di Design said of its degree.

The course aims to encourage students to develop new ways of thinking about design. Students will reinterpret and learn artisanal skills while finding new applications for materials when designing interiors and furniture.

The university explained that once students finish their studies, they will be capable of producing innovative furniture while also recognising "the interdependence between design decisions and the impact on people, society and the environment".

"The Interior and Furniture Design aims to train professionals capable of 'hacking' traditional knowledge, reinterpreting artisanal skills, and finding new applications for the material and natural resources of the territory," said the university.

The degree is based on the university's DesignXCommons vision, a design approach that examines 'common goods' while focusing on social and environmental sustainability.

The university defines 'common goods' as "the set of material and immaterial resources, with which several communities of people relate" and says it is rooted in all its courses.

Aligned with this overarching vision, students on the new course will also explore accessibility in design and how the subject has a "fundamental role as a social balancer in making a more equitable future accessible to all".

The university explained that the programme also aligns with the sustainability principles of its Master of Arts in Textile Design programme – Eco-Threads: Materials and Circularity and gives students a broad insight into sustainable textile design.

The programme aims to prompt future designers to reinterpret traditional furniture design with a modern and sustainable lens.

The degree takes two years to complete and is based at Istituto Europeo di Design's campus in Florence, Italy.

To be accepted candidates must hold a degree in design, product design, industrial design, architecture, interior design, or engineering or a First Level Academic Diploma.

Applicants need to be familiar with 2D and 3D software, and the Adobe Suite, while also demonstrating proficiency in English.
