Quick Thoughts

My wife was targeted for a couple of these spending offers on different cards – a Hawaiian Airlines card and a Wyndham Rewards Earner Plus card. The email subject lines were ‘Enroll today: Earn bonus HawaiianMiles’ and ‘Enroll today: Earn bonus points’ respectively in case you wanted to try searching your inbox.

On her Hawaiian card, she got an offer to earn 3 additional miles per dollar on up to $800 spend at grocery stores, gas stations and restaurants. That card already earns 2x in those three categories, so the +3 means it’ll earn a total of 5x which is a decent return. Perhaps not entirely coincidentally, those are the same spending categories for most of Chase’s cobranded spending offers this quarter, albeit with a slightly lower spending cap from Barclays.

The offer she got on her Wyndham Rewards Earner Plus card has a different setup. That one is awarding 2,500 bonus points when spending $50+ five times in any category. The Earner Plus card earns 6x at gas stations or 4x at grocery stores and restaurants. An easy way to max that out would be to buy some kind of $50 gift card five times at a grocery store or gas station. If doing that at a gas station, she’d earn a total of 4,000 bonus points on $250 spend which equates to a 16x return. That’s definitely very tempting.

The emails she received had links in them to activate the spending offers. Those weren’t one-click registration links though and it was a little goofy when trying to log in and subsequently register. Registration links to the spending offers could subsequently be found in the Offers tab in the menu after logging in, so it’s worth taking a look there even if you didn’t get an email in order to see if you’ve been targeted.

If you have more than one card issued by Barclays, you’ll need to click between your different cards in order to check each one.
