Amazon Lands “The Beekeeper” Sequel

Amazon MGM Studios has scored the worldwide distribution rights to the sequel to David Ayer’s “The Beekeeper”.

Jason Statham will reprise his role in the sequel, which is due to start production in the Fall. Miramax is producing and closed the deal with Amazon, one said to be worth well over $50 million.

Timo Tjahjanto (“Nobody 2”) is taking over as director in this outing which will be penned by Kurt Wimmer. Miramax is producing and negotiated the deal with Amazon.

The first film saw Statham playing a retired intelligence operative who suffers a personal tragedy due to his friend and former caretaker ending her life after falling for a phishing scam. He intends to make those responsible pay.

Emmy Raver-Lampman, Minnie Driver, Josh Hutcherson and Jeremy Irons also starred. The film not only grossed an impressive $153 million at the global box office, it also pulled in generally positive reviews.

Statham will produce through his Punch Palace Productions and Long Shot Productions.
