Jon Bernthal Is Building Something Special With His New PUNISHER Project for Marvel

Jon Bernthal is putting his heart into The Punisher and the Marvel Special Presentation project that he’s developing. At CinemaCon 2025, Bernthal gave fans a promising update on the project, confirming that work is well underway and that he’s pulling together a powerhouse creative team to make it happen.“I've said it a million times: Frank is in my bones, is in my heart. I care about him,” Bernthal told Collider. “In discussing what this thing could be and this sort of version of Frank that I really felt that the audience was hungry for, that the military community was hungry for it, the first responder community, the comic book fans, they were really hungry for it. I presented that version to them, and they encouraged me. They encouraged me to keep coming to the table.”Bernthal’s take on Frank Castle first hit the screen during Netflix’s Defenders Saga, where his intense, grounded portrayal was a hit with audience. And now, with his return teased in Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel is giving the Punisher his own spotlight again, this time with standalone special. What kind of story fans can expect is still being kept under wraps, but Marvel Television’s Brad Winderbaum offered a cryptic but exciting tease: “It's like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story. It's so exciting.”Behind the scenes, Bernthal is clearly making sure the story gets the care and authenticity it deserves, especially for the communities who’ve always felt a deep connection to the character.“As we were talking with different writers, the ideas that we were coming up with started to resonate, and I think they saw how much they resonated with me,” Bernthal said. “I got a great group of vets that I work with. One in particular, my friend Nick, he's just been incredible. I hope that it goes alright. I don't like talking about these things because it's a little bit of bark before there's a bite, you know? I'm honored and I'm grateful. It's an incredible group of people that we're assembling.”For Bernthal, this is a personal passion project, and for fans of Frank Castle, that’s exactly what we want to hear.
