Strauss Zelnick, who runs Take-Two Interactive who owns Rockstar Games, recently sat down for a video interview with Bloomberg to discuss the highly anticipated “Grand Theft Auto VI”.
While the fifth game arrived five years after the fourth, the sixth game is coming a full twelve yeard after the fifth. Asked why the game has taken so long to appear as compared to the fifth one, Strauss says:
“It takes a long time to develop these big, robust experiences. Rockstar Games seeks perfection in what they do and perfection is a pretty high bar.”
He also says building anticipation is key, one of the reasons why Take-Two chooses not to put out frequent entries to its titles beyond its sports games.
Strauss, who originally came from the film industry, says marketing a title like this isn’t that from a major Hollywood blockbuster with TV spots, outdoor ads, tie-in brands, etc. In addition, social media is a focus ] as “we typically don’t spend money on Superbowl ads”.
Then came the big question, when does the title release? Multiple rival companies are holding off announcing any of their Fall 2025 release dates – opting to wait until Rockstar plants its flag before locking down their schedules.
According to Zelnick, it’s going to be a long wait because the company has no plans to announce the date until close to release – shortening the marketing cycle for the title:
“The anticipation for that title may be the greatest anticipation I’ve ever seen for an entertainment property. And I’ve been around the block a few times and I’ve been in every entertainment business there is.
We want to maintain the anticipation and the excitement. And we do have competitors who will describe their release schedule for years in advance.
We found that the better thing to do is to provide marketing materials relatively close to the release window in order to create that excitement on the one hand and balance the excitement with unmet anticipation.
We don’t always get it exactly right, but that’s what we trying to do.”
Rockstar Games dropped the first trailer in December 2023 but have remained radio silent ever since aside from stating the game is still on target for a Fall 2025 release.
