Zach Braff enlisted a bunch of artists from the soundtrack to his 2004 film Garden State to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary and raise money for homeless shelter and services provider The Midnight Mission on Saturday. His co-star Natalie Portman and Danny DeVito (whose Jersey Films company produced the film) joined him for the occasion, as did Sarah Paulson and Braff’s Scrubs co-stars Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke. The Shins were, of course, on hand to perform “New Slang,” with Portman telling the crowd that Braff considered it “a very tricky spot to place a song because when Sam puts her headphones on Andrew, it had to be one that everyone would love. It couldn’t just be good, it had to be life-changing. So 20 years later, I say to you once again, you gotta hear this song, it’ll change your life.” They also played “Caring is Creepy.” Frou Frou, on before them, did “Let Go” and an improvised track that featured Imogen Heap‘s vocals combined with sounds from the crowd. Laufey, one of the evening’s surprise guests, covered Coldplay’s “Don’t Panic,” the first song from the soundtrack, and Iron & Wine did his acoustic rendition of The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights,” his own “Naked as We Came,” and a cover of Nick Drake’s “One of These Things First” with Madison Cunningham joining him. Remy Zero reunited earlier in the evening for their first performance since 2010 for “Fair” and “Save Me,” and the show also featured Sophie Barker from Zero 7 (“In the Waiting Line”), Bonnie Somerville (“Winding Road”), Cary Brothers (“Blue Eyes”), Colin Hay (“I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You” and “Down Under”), and The Milk Carton Kids (“The Only Living Boy in New York”), wrapping up with a group rendition of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin.” See pictures from the first part of the show by Wei Shi below, along with a couple of video clips. If you missed the show, or you’d like to relive it, it will stream on Veeps on April 6 at 9 PM ET. Tickets to watch are on sale now, and there is also an option to buy a ticket bundled with an exclusive red vinyl variant of the soundtrack, as well as with the exclusive merch that was otherwise only available in person at the show. Limited copies of the exclusive vinyl are also now in the BrooklynVegan shop.
