A new rumour suggests 28 Days Later’s Alex Garland will be directing a movie adaptation of Elden Ring – but fans aren’t convinced.

Yesterday (May 6), movie website Nexus Point News shared an exclusive story that Alex Garland’s next movie would be an adaptation of Elden Ring for acclaimed publishers A24. The report went on to say filming would begin next year.

The rumour quickly went viral across social media before Nexus Point News deleted the article and any mention of it from their own channels.

“This is fake, just so everyone knows,” one fan wrote on Reddit.” I love how literally every gamer on Reddit is the most gullible person alive,” added another. Nexus Point News hasn’t commented on the retraction and A24’s Sophia Shin also declined to comment on the story (via The Verge).

Game Of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, who helped with “a bit of worldbuilding” on Elden Ring, has hinted that an adaptation is in the works though. Last year he took to his own blog and wrote: “Oh, and about those rumours you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, what rumour.”

At the start of 2025 he went on to confirm that there is “some talk” about an Elden Ring movie but he might not be involved. “We’ll see if it comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement would be. I’m a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do.”

Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has previously said there’s an “active” interest in an adaptation of the game, but only if he and the rest of FromSoftware weren’t too heavily involved. “I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play,” he explained.

Last month it was reported that a movie adaptation of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was already in the works, despite the game only just launching. It was also rumoured that Sydney Sweeney is set to star in the movie adaptation of Split Fiction.

In other news, the second trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 has finally been shared after the game was pushed back to 2026.
