Becky G:
Buenas noches. Como estamos, mi gente. Or should I say, what’s up? Inglewood. See, we’re in my hometown, I had to represent. Hello everybody. I am Becky G and I am so honored to be back at Billboard Women in Music. But this time to pass the torch to someone. I have the pleasure of calling my friend, Tyla, tonight’s recipient of the Impact Award presented by Bose. That’s right. Make some noise. You see Tyla’s breakout hit, “Water.” Get it? “Water: made waves worldwide, hitting No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it also spent 55 weeks at No. 1 on the US Afrobeat Songs chart, topped the mainstream R&B Hip-Hop Airplay chart for eight weeks, and won the first ever Grammy for best African music performance. You see, from TikTok to Jennifer Hudson, she had the whole world trying to do that “Water” dance, and I might even try it after a few more tequilas. Don’t tempt me. I’m just kidding. While Tyla was working on her self-titled debut album, I happened to be in the studio next door and she called me over. We kiki. We hung out for a little bit and she played me a track, and the moment I heard “On My Body,” there was an immediate connection and I loved it. And I’m so glad that our paths crossed that day. The rest is history. Her album went on to hit No. 2 on the Top R&B Albums chart, and she’s now got another No. 1 Afrobeats smash with “Push 2 Start.”
