Watch the Pavement movie’s official trailer

After a couple festival premieres and a teaser, the official trailer for PAVEMENTS, Alex Ross Perry‘s movie about the indie rock icons Pavement, is finally out in the world.

The trailer opens with a quote from “Frontwards” — “The stories you hear, you know they never add up” — which is a tip of the hat to the film itself, which is full of unreliable narrators (except there is no narration in PAVEMENTS), fake biopics and jukebox musicals, semi-real museums, more traditional music doc elements and lots of meta in-jokes, all put into a blender. You then hear the most appropriate Pavement quote, “You’ve been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to your life” (from “Shady Lane”) as the trailer gives you a taste of its very unusual, layers-of-onions structure. The biopic features Stranger Things‘ Joe Keery as Stephen Malkmus, and Jason Schwartzman and Tim Heidecker as Matador Records’ Chris Lombardi and Gerard Cosloy, respectively.

Watch the trailer, and check out the official PAVEMENTS poster, below.

PAVEMENTS will screen at NYC’s Film Forum starting May 2 with an opening weekend featuring Q&As with Alex Ross Perry, Pavement members Steve West and Mark Ibold, plus Michael Esper and Kathryn Gallagher, who appear in the jukebox musical segments. Tickets for Film Forum go on sale Tuesday, March 25.

The film then gets a LA premiere on May 9 before opening in select cities on June 9.
