The new title of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie is causing some debate about fans over spoilers.

Released last week (May 1), Thunderbolts* stars Florence Pugh at the head of an all-star cast of Marvel supporting characters, who come together to seek revenge on their former employer, government chief Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

In the closing moments of the film, the team confront Valentina, having defeated Sentry (Lewis Pullman), a god-like being who is the result of her experiments. In an attempt to escape retribution, she pushes them into a press conference where she announces them as The New Avengers, lying that this was her plan all along.

Following the release of the film, castmembers were seen replacing posters for Thunderbolts* with ones saying The New Avengers, with the asterisk in the original title referring to this new name. However, not everyone was happy with the idea of the film’s end twist being part of the marketing.

On X (formerly Twitter), a user lamented: “They really said ‘fuck anyone who haven’t seen the movie yet’”; while another said: “Actually hate this marketing. It just doesn’t work”.
