Actress Jessica Rothe has confirmed that the long-awaited third installment in the “Happy Death Day” horror-comedy franchise is ‘moving forward’.

Rothe confirmed the news while appearing on stage at the American Cinematheque last night alongside director Christopher Landon to host a double feature screening of the first two movies. Landon then himself added: “It is moving forward”.

The first film launched in 2017, a Groundhog Day meets slasher film all rolled up into a dark comedy which received positive reviews and grossed $125 million worldwide on a $4.8 million budget. Rothe in particular scored much acclaim for her role as party girl turned hero Tree Gelbman.

That was followed up three years later with 2020’s “Happy Death Day 2U” which offered a more sci-fi and a more emotional storyline. It wasn’t as well received, taking in $64 million worldwide from a $9 million budget – but opened right as the pandemic was getting underway and so found its full box-office potential curtailed.

At last report several years ago, Christopher Landon had revealed that the working title for the third installment was “Happy Death Day to Us” with a tone different than the other two films.

Landon himself has been busy with other projects, his new thriller “Drop” will release in cinemas this coming Friday.
