Axe Ceremonia cancelled after 2 die following crane collapse

Mexico City festival Axe Ceremonia has been cancelled following the death of two people on Saturday (4/5), Billboard reports. A translation of a message from the mayor’s office of the Miguel Hidalgo borough, where the festival is located, reads, “The teams from Miguel Hidalgo Government and Legal Affairs and Civil Protection Department, together with the Administrative Verification Institute of Mexico City, completed the verification and the seals of suspension of activities were placed at the entrances to the AXE Ceremonia, in the Bicentennial Park. Therefore, the event this Sunday, April 6, is suspended.”

A message from the festival on Sunday, translated to English, reads, “Following the unfortunate incident that occurred yesterday, we inform you that it has been decided to suspend the activities scheduled for today, following the guidelines of the corresponding authorities. Our sympathies and support go out to their families and loved ones during this difficult time. Refunds will be issued automatically through Ticketmaster, who is providing information about the process through its channels.”

According to a statement from the Mexico City Government, issued through the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection, the fatal incident happened around 5:30 PM, when a crane carrying a metal object collapsed in a gust of wind and fell on two people. They were treated on site, and were transported to a hospital, where they passed away. Mexican newspaper El Universal confirmed their identities as Miguel Angel Rojas, 26, and Berenice Giles, 28, both photographers.

Mr. Indie posted a statement to X/Twitter, which reads (translated to English), “Our hearts ache. Bere and Miguel weren’t just part of Mr. Indie. They were our friends, our companions, our visions behind the music.Today we share this statement to honor who they were and all they left behind.”

More from Billboard:

According to a statement issued by the Miguel Hidalgo mayor’s office, the incident may have been caused by the installation of additional cranes by the organizers, which had not been included in the program submitted to authorities for the pre-festival inspection.

Local authorities stated that, as this was a private event, the project director and the official in charge of Civil Protection, both hired by the festival organizers, will be subject to the investigation initiated by the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office.

The festival’s Sunday lineup had included Tyler the Creator, Massive Attack, Gesaffelstein, Lil Yachty, The Marías, and more.
