If you thought Netflix’s highly acclaimed and hit drama “Adolescence” was grim and bleak watching, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
UK production banner Warp Films, who produced the mini-series, has reportedly acquired the rights to develop a TV series remake of the infamous 1984 British nuclear holocaust feature “Threads”.
Directed by Mick Jackson (“L.A. Story,” “The Bodyguard”) and penned by author Barry Hines, the low-budget telemovie follows two families in Sheffield as a nuclear confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union erupts.
Shot documentary style, the film scored much acclaim for the way it doesn’t turn away or glamorise horror, taking a less is more approach as it shows the impact on society both immediately and over many years that follow – right up to an unforgettable final segment in a makeshift hospital.
To more than a few horror aficionados who saw it at the time it aired, during the height of the 1980s Cold War, it remains one of the few works that genuinely chills the blood. Nominated for seven BAFTA awards and winning four at the time, in the four decades since the film has only gone up in critical estimation.
It is one of the few movies to score 100% on Rotten Tomatoes for that year (“The Terminator” is another), and stands at a very high 92/100 on Metacritic.
The new series version aims to update things for the modern age. Mark Herbert, founder and chief executive officer at Warp Films, says:
“Threads was, and remains, an unflinchingly honest drama that imagines the devastating effects of nuclear conflict on ordinary people. This story aligns perfectly with our ethos of telling powerful, grounded narratives that deeply connect with audiences. Reimagining this classic film as a TV drama gives us a unique opportunity to explore its modern relevance.”
“Adolescence,” centred around a teenage boy arrested for the murder of a girl in his school,” has pulled in 66.3 million views in 11 days – more than any other Netflix limited series has achieved within a two-week period.
