For those who have never hit Tampa’s Spookala, a fantastic and quickly-growing convention that’s home to numerous horror-related guests and a massive hall full of cool vendors, consider it a great reason to weather the heat, humidity, gators and bath salt zombies the state is generally known for.
This past weekend’s con saw fans enjoying autograph and photo opportunities with genre heavyweights like Saw’s Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith (icons, both), Count Crowley’s David Dastmalchian (super nice guy), and The Punisher’s Thomas Jane (returning to the area for the first time in the two decades since that film was made). In addition, The Lost Boys’ Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Patric were in attendance, as well as Orphan/Orphan: First Kill star Isabelle Fuhrman.
Fuhrman was gracious with her time in chatting with each fan who approached her, including yours truly, who was able to thank her in person for chatting with BD a while back about her film The Last Thing Mary Saw. When given the opportunity, this writer couldn’t help but ask about the status of Orphan 3, which she was all too happy to discuss.
For starters, Isabelle Fuhrman confirmed that the script for Orphan 3 has already been written, and that the twists are even “wilder and crazier” in this entry (no small feat, given the jaw-droppers in the previous two films). She also noted that while there was some trepidation in doing a second entry after the well-received first film told such a contained story, fan response to that sequel inspired the creative team to carry on with another installment.
The biggest bit of news concerning this upcoming threequel came when I asked Fuhrman if the new film would be another prequel like First Kill…or, perhaps, a sequel to the original – which would be a surprise, given her character’s state by the end of that film’s conclusion. Nevertheless, she delighted this fan by responding “Both.”
So…Esther lives?
Sound off in the comments below! Are you excited to see more Orphan? How could Esther have survived? How many appointments with a chiropractor will be necessary for her poor neck after the devastating Farmiga-ing she received? Let us know what you think!
Plot details for Orphan 3 are under wraps, but we do know that William Brent Bell (“The Boy” franchise) is back to direct and David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill) wrote the script.
In the original Orphan, “A husband and wife adopt a 9-year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she appears.” It turns out that Esther is actually a 33-year-old adult woman.
In the 2022 prequel, “After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family.”
The prequel saw Isabelle Fuhrman reprising the role of Esther thanks to clever production trickery. You can learn all about that in our chat with makeup effects artist Doug Morrow.
