Don’t get your hopes up of seeing Kingpin in a film anytime soon as actor Vincent D’Onofrio explains he can only play Fisk on TV. There had been rumors of Fisk showing up in a previous version of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and likely that would have been fine. Far as we know it’s Sony and not Disney who holds the movie rights to Fisk’s character. However, that would mean any other movie appearances can be denied by Sony.

Speaking on Happy Sad Confused D’Onofrio explained why for now he’s limited to TV Marvel appearances.

“I’m only usable for television shows … Not even a one-off Wilson Fisk movie … It’s all caught up in rights and stuff. I don’t know when that would work out — or if it ever would work out at all”

Now it was my LRM colleague Shockey who reminded myself and Kyle that Sony had Kingpin movie rights. You may be confused like we were because the last time Kingpin was in a movie was in the Fox Daredevil film. Like us, you probably thought Fisk would then be included in the Fox purchase by Disney. However, Shockey reminded us that Sony bought several characters rights from Fox before the Disney sale began. Fisk was apparently one of them, but only for movies.

What sucks is how little Sony have utilized the character so far. As in, not at all. Luckily for us, D’Onofrio, who was born to play the role can appear on TV and should do so for multiple seasons of Daredevil: Born Again to come. As for the movies, unless it’s for a Spider-Man movie and therefore in Sony’s interests financially, then it seems unlikely.

Can’t have Hulk movies! Cannot use Fisk or any Spider-Man character in the MCU unless allowed by Sony! Maybe in an alt-Universe Sony never existed and they had an MCU which began with the full roster? Sadly, it was not our Earth.

What do you think as Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio explains he can only play Fisk on TV? Thoughts below as always.
