“Drive,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and “Our Kind of Traitor” scribe Hossein Amini has been hired to pen the re-write of “Clayface” at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures.
Amini takes over from beloved auteur Mike Flanagan (“Doctor Sleep,” “Midnight Mass,” “The Fall of the House of Usher”) who penned the standalone tragedy-laced horror/thriller which boasts a tight $40 million budget.
Last week came the report via Jeff Sneider that Flanagan submitted an early draft, but his focus is now fully on his “Carrie” remake for Amazon. So, a new writer was brought aboard – but it wasn’t known who at the time.
James Watkins (“Speak No Evil,” “Evil Lake”) is attached to direct the project which will be produced by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. Shooting begins in October in the U.K.
The news is still a surprise as Gunn has previously indicated Flanagan’s script for the film was complete enough that it was what led to the film being greenlit in the first place.
The story for the film sounds fairly akin to the 1990s “Batman: The Animated Series” episode introducing the character, along with the more recent acclaimed film “The Substance”. It follows a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form – making him a walking piece of clay.
DC Studios will release “Clayface” on September 11th 2026.
