A sequel to Lights Out was announced a week after the original film’s release in 2016, but nothing ever came of it. Replying to a fan on Instagram, director David F. Sandberg confirmed that the follow-up is unlikely to happen.
“It’s been nine years since that movie came out. I think the moment has passed,” the filmmaker wrote. “There was a script for a sequel but that particular script wouldn’t work now that Gabriel is an adult.”
He’s referring to Gabriel Bateman, who starred as Martin in the supernatural horror film alongside Teresa Palmer, Alexander DiPersia, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello.
Lights Out marked Sandberg’s feature directorial debut, based on his viral short film of the same name. Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Bird Box) penned the script.
When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out… and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety.
A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger… once the lights go out.
Sandberg went on to helm Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. His latest effort, the video game adaptation Until Dawn, hits theaters on April 25.
