Billy Ray Cyrus and longtime publicist Scott Adkins have launched Roam Man Management and signed their first client, Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist and Shalamar member Micki Free.
The latter’s career spans decades and includes collaborations with members of the Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Boston and Cheap Trick, as well as Carlos Santana and Janet Jackson. “Welcome to Music City and Roam Man Productions, Micki Free,” says Cyrus. “Proud and honored you chose to join us. Can’t wait for the world to hear what you’ve been working on.”
Free got his big break after signing a management deal with KISS’ Gene Simmons in the 1970s. In Shalamar, he formed a lasting friendship with Prince, which was alluded to in a legendary 2004 Chappelle’s Show episode involving Eddie Murphy and his brother Charlie playing basketball against the musicians.
”Billy and I have always talked about working together for years, and now we are finally going to make that dream happen,” says Free, whose work blends blues, rock, and Native American sounds. “I couldn’t be happier. I love the energy of Scott Adkins. His positivity and drive complement our new partnership.”
In 2023, Free performed at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as an official envoy for the World Culture Festival, where he led a 1,000-member guitar ensemble and debuted the single, “We Are One,” which was written for the occasion. Free is also a five-time Native American Music Award winner and an inductee into The Native American Music Hall of Fame. Along with his wife Heather, he founded The Musical Beginning Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to empowering underrepresented youth through the gift of music.
He recently released his EP, Dreamcatcher, as well as a video for its title track.
“Micki Free is a Grammy-winning multihyphenate who’s jammed with Prince, co-wrote with KISS’s Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, and even shared the stage with Cyrus,” says Adkins. “We’re thrilled to be on this journey with Micki.”
