Warners May Shift “The Batman: Part II” Plans?

In recent years, many of the headlines surrounding the sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2022 feature “The Batman” have been about the multiple delays to the project.

Nearly three years since the first film’s release and the highly anticipated sequel has yet to begin filming. For a good two years now, plenty of speculation has taken over the digital discourse about the film.

Previously it has been reported that Reeves is dealing with personal issues that may have led to the delays with the script. At last report though, filming was on track to begin at the end of this year.

When Robert Pattinson was announced as being up for a major role in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune Messiah,” which will shoot starting this Summer and across the back half of this year, eyebrows were raised and speculation surged again – even as it’s perfectly possible schedule-wise for Pattinson to shoot the third “Dune” and then jump over to the second “The Batman”.

As the fights between the “this film won’t happen” and “the film is happening” digital mobs intensified, scooper Grace Randolph weighed in yesterday with a cryptic statement about the seriousness of Reeves’ personal issue.

That statement has drawn criticism from fans and other creators, including former “X-Men ’97” showrunner Beau DeMayo who in a tweet labelled her comment “disgusting”.

Since then scooper Jeff Sneider has weighed in on The Hot Mic over all this and has pushed back on the claims the movie’s shoot has been delayed to next year:

“I think [Pattinson] is doing both. He will be in Dune 3, and yes, that’s summer. Then he’s going into The Batman in the winter… I don’t think there were any massive delays. We could just be debating semantics here. Technically, December 31 and January 1 are different year, and they are a second apart.”

After talking about Randolph’s comment, it’s then that he drops a surprise – he indicates Warners may be done waiting and may have no choice but for someone else to take over:

“I know that Grace said something the other day on her show. I think that she had certain things wrong. I think that situation is still unresolved and that’s why things are still unresolved as far as The Batman.

I’ll put it this way: I think even though that situation may be unresolved, I would say that if a decision isn’t made by the end of the year – if the movie doesn’t get up and running by the end of the year – I do think [Reeves] will exit.

I think it will be a, ‘Hey, we’ve got to move on here.’ It will be very sad. At this point, people are understanding of the circumstances, but there’s some frustration and it’s gonna be, ‘We need to go on this, with or without you soon.'”

Subsequent to this, he advised on X that he was only stating his opinion as opposed to any concrete plans about a potential replacement.

If the project does begin shooting either at year’s end or early next year, it’ll likely make the currently planned October 2027 release assuming no further delays. That’s a gap of more than five years since the first film hit.
