Earlier this week it seemed that Marvel Studios’ long-gestating “Blade” film may have found a new director.
The report indicated that Marvel’s Kevin Feige was determined to press on with the project, and the ever-busy “John Wick” helmer Chad Stahelski could be the one to steer it.
Well, this afternoon came a new report that may have thrown cold water on those plans. In a long post on X, The Playlist’s Rodrigo Perez was advised that the “Blade” film has been ‘nixed’ with active development on the project shuttered.
He adds “that doesn’t mean we won’t get a ‘Blade’ movie someday” but then compares what happened to it as the same as what happened to the “Nova” TV series – in that any development work on the project has stopped.
Why? Well it sounds like they plan to introduce Mahershala Ali’s version of the character another way:
“Blade will likely be introduced formally in either the still-developing “Midnight Suns” movie or “Avengers: Secret Wars,” or possibly as a supporting character in another movie – like the way Namor was first introduced in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.
If I were a betting man, I would say likely not “Secret Wars” as Marvel tends to not randomly add new characters into big ensemble casts like that because Blade would totally be lost in that shuffle and would not get a proper introduction. It’ll either be “Midnight Suns” and if they don’t crack that story, they’ll likely find a way to introduce him in someone else’s story, perhaps paving the way for a solo film down the road. Things shift, things change, this is what I’ve heard in the most recent moment.”
Ali was set for the lead role in 2019, but attempts to get the film off the ground since then have stalled with two directors – Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange – formally walking away. Cary Fukunaga was also rumored but never confirmed.
At least six writers have also taken a crack at the script, including Eric Pearson, Michael Green, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Beau DeMayo and Nic Pizzolatto.
