Bungie has confirmed its upcoming first-person PvP extraction shooter, Marathon, will not require a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to play on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Bungie confirms PSN account not required for PC and Xbox Marathon players

In Marathon’s official Discord channel, a community member voiced their displeasure at the potential of a PSN account requirement to play the upcoming game. Bungie responded “Marathon will not require a PlayStation Account for players on PC and Xbox,” putting eager players’ worries to rest.

This concern stems from the fact that Bungie is a subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony initially required players to have a PSN account to play some of its PC games, like Ghost of Tsushima and Helldivers 2. This move proved to be controversial as many fans pushed back on the requirement. This is mostly because PSN isn’t available everywhere, which meant some players couldn’t play its PC ports at all. The feature has since become optional with the release of Spider-Man 2’s PC port.

Bungie formally revealed it was reviving Marathon back in 2023 during the PlayStation Showcase. Little glimpses of screenshots of the game have been shown, but proper gameplay has yet to be revealed. In fact, the developer announced a reveal event recently, which will showcase gameplay of the upcoming first-person shooter. Fans can finally see the game in action on Saturday, April 12, at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. It will be broadcast on PlayStation’s YouTube and Twitch channels.

“Become a Runner in Bungie’s upcoming sci-fi PvP extraction shooter, Marathon,” reads the game’s description. “You are a cybernetic mercenary venturing into the unknown in a fight for survival and fortune where any run can lead to greatness.”

Marathon will come to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC when it eventually launches in the future.
