Several new Stephen King adaptations are on the way here in 2025, one of which is a feature film adaptation of King’s The Long Walk from director Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and writer JT Mollner (Strange Darling). It’s coming to theaters in September, and Vanity Fair provides us with a first look today.
In The Long Walk, first published in 1979, “The country holds an annual walking contest in which 100 teens must journey, non-stop and under strict rules, until only one of them is still standing alive and receiving a prize. The story told of a 16-year old walker named Raymond Garraty and the teens, some good, some bad, some mysterious, in his orbit.”
Star Cooper Hoffman tells Vanity Fair, “The Long Walk is a metaphor for life, in my eyes. It’s a metaphor for any sort of hard thing you’re going through, whether it’s depression or anxiety or heartbreak or whatever. Sometimes in life, you want to stop walking, and that’s a really dark thought. But the second you acknowledge that and come to terms with it – and then keep going – that’s a really beautiful thing.” Read the full article for more images and insights.
Look for Lionsgate’s The Long Walk to arrive in theaters on September 12, 2025.
The film’s cast also includes David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus), Garrett Wareing (Ransom Canyon), Tut Nyout (The Witcher: Blood Origin), Charlie Plummer (Spontaneous), Ben Wang (American Born Chinese), Jordan Gonzalez (Pretty Little Liars: Summer School), Joshua Odjick (Welcome to Derry), Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit), Judy Greer (Halloween 2018), and Mark Hamill (The Life of Chuck).
Stephen King penned The Long Walk under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. First published in 1979, the novel is set in future dystopian America ruled by an authoritarian.
