Event Horizon was considered a critical and commercial failure upon its release in 1997, but the cosmic horror film has since developed a cult following large enough to warrant a comic book prequel series.

Variety reports that Event Horizon: Dark Descent will launch its first of five issues releasing on August 20 via IDW Publishing.

Taking place prior to the film’s 2047 setting, the comic will uncover what really happened to Captain Kilpack and the first Event Horizon crew as their ship journeyed across a nightmarish realm of torments beyond imagining.

At the helm are writer Christian Ward (Batman: City of Madness), artist Tristan Jones (Aliens: Defiance), and colorist Pip Martin (That Texas Blood).

Issue #1 features a primary cover by Jeffrey Alan Love, variant covers by Ward, Martin Simmonds, and Joshua Hixson, a foil art variant of Ward’s cover, and a sketch cover.

“It’s a huge privilege to be handed the keys of such a beloved film, one I take very seriously and I have some extremely exciting things up my sleeve,” said Ward. “Big gory swings will be happening. You’ll never see the film in the same light again.”

“I think what Christian’s laying out and adding to the lore is going to surprise people,” added Jones. “It’s certainly given me a lot of gnarly, visceral stuff to chew on visually, which is always fun and knowing that this is being done directly in collaboration with the team behind the film certainly helps lock things in as something fans of the film will want to explore with us.”

In the 1997 film from director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) and writer Philip Eisner (Mutant Chronicles), a rescue squad investigates a spaceship that got sucked into a black hole and resurfaced with a strange new presence.

Event Horizon: Dark Descent is part of the horror imprint IDW Dark, which is expanding further Paramount films into comic book form. Other titles will include A Quiet Place, Smile, Sleepy Hollow, and “The Twilight Zone.”
