Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral infection, presents serious health challenges, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Traditional diagnostic methods typically rely on blood samples, specialized laboratory equipment, and trained personnel — resources that are often limited in many low-income or remote areas. As a result, in parts of Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa, many cases go undiagnosed and untreated, increasing the risk of severe complications and, in some instances, death.
Crux Product Design has come up with a concept for a dengue fever test kit that reimagines traditional diagnostic methods. It addresses the challenges mentioned above by integrating microneedle technology into a user-friendly patch, potentially allowing individuals to self-administer the test with minimal discomfort and without specialized training. By facilitating early and accessible diagnosis, this test kit concept could play a crucial role in controlling dengue outbreaks. Early detection enables timely medical intervention, reducing the risk of severe complications and transmission. Moreover, empowering individuals with self-testing tools can alleviate the burden on healthcare systems, especially during peak outbreak periods.

All the user needs to do is attach the patch to their upper arm and press the first blister button, which activates the microneedles to painlessly collect a small blood sample. Pressing the second blister then mixes the buffer solution with the sample to initiate the test. Finally, pressing the third blister releases an antiseptic to ensure the extraction site remains clean. After removing the device, the user waits approximately 15 minutes for the results to appear. If the result is positive, they should repeat the procedure with a new patch to confirm the diagnosis and determine the stage of the infection. Disposal is also safe and easy as you should just place the used patches in the biohazard bags that are included in the kits and they should be ready for disposal.
The kit will include two different kinds of patches with different biomarkers. One is able to detect early-stage infection while the other one can identify prolonged or secondary infection conditions. While still a concept, Crux Product Design’s dengue fever test kit represents a promising advancement in point-of-care diagnostics. Its innovative use of microneedle technology aligns with global efforts to develop accessible, efficient, and user-friendly medical devices. As the project progresses, further research and development will be essential to validate its efficacy and explore potential applications for other infectious diseases. Hopefully, this will also be affordable especially in the areas that are most affected by dengue outbreaks.
