‘The Surrender’ – Occult Ritual Horror Movie Gets a Hellish Trailer

Grief gets a gnarly new shakeup in The Surrender, the feature debut by writer-director Julia Max. Shudder has released the hellish new trailer ahead of the occult ritual horror movie’s debut next month.

The Surrender is set to debut on Shudder in North America, UK/Ireland and Australia/New Zealand on May 23.

The horror movie stars Colby Minifie (“The Boys “) and Kate Burton (“Grey’s Anatomy”) as a fraught mother-daughter duo whose relationship is “put to a terrifying test when the family patriarch dies, and the grieving mother hires a mysterious stranger to bring her husband back from the dead. As the bizarre and brutal resurrection spirals out of control, both women must confront their differences as they fight for their lives – and for each other.”

Neil Sandilands (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, “Sweet Tooth”), Vaughn Armstrong, Mia Ellis, Pete Ploszek, Chelsea Alden, Alaina Pollack, Riley Rose Critchlow, and Lola Prince Kelly also star.

“This was very heavily inspired by my experience with my mother and with our death doula when my stepfather passed away, and honestly, I stole quite a bit from that,” Max told BD of her film’s origins. “From what we actually did without getting into too many spoilers. But basically, every single time we started a new step, in my mind, I kept thinking, ‘What is the worst direction this could possibly go in next?’ and wrote that down essentially.”

I wrote in my review, “It’s a wholly unique vision of grief, filled with carnage and unspeakable horror that escalates at a steady clip. To see it interpreted in this way, a visceral, thrilling, and high-stakes vision without ever dampening the complicated, messy, and unglamorous nature of loss, marks Max as one to watch.” And, “Russell FX brings the bloodletting and violence, and hellish visions from another realm. The Surrender excites on visuals alone, but Max has a knack for scare-crafting as well.”
