Maria Somerville touring US for 4AD debut ‘Luster’

Irish artist Maria Somerville released Luster last week which is her first album for 4AD. For fans of the label’s mid-’80s to mid-’90s imperial era, Luster fits in perfectly alongside classics by Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil and His Name Is Alive. From our Notable Releases review: “After garnering praise for her self-released 2019 debut album All My People, Dublin artist Maria Somerville signed to the iconic 4AD label and now releases her sophomore LP and 4AD debut, Luster. Comparisons to ambient pop artists like Grouper and Julianna Barwick are easy to make, and Maria Somerville finds ways to take that genre in a few different directions, like with the driving beats of “Stonefly,” the chamber-shoegaze of “Spring,” the folky “Trip,” and the pipe drones from Lankum’s Ian Lynch on “Violet.” For a style of music that’s fueled by quiet minimalism, the swelling atmospheres of Luster can feel larger than life.”
