HBO’s “Lanterns” Halfway Through Filming

Actor Jason Ritter has offered an update on his role in HBO’s “Lanterns” series that is currently in production.

Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler star in the series, first announced a year ago. The show follows Hal Jordan (Chandler), a legend amongst the space police force known as the Green Lanterns.

He is reluctantly mentoring John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), a younger Green Lantern. The two intergalactic cops get drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Filming on the series began in late February, with the first photo being released around that time. But to now, just over two months later, Ritter tells Forbes the production has hit the halfway mark of its eight-episode run:

“We’ve shot four episodes so far and we’re about to start shooting episodes three and four. We’re doing it all a little out of order. The story is kind of jumping all around, but its been so fun, and it’s a really well-written, really fun show. I’m just trying to fit into that world and maybe put a little silliness in there.”

Ritter plays Billy Macon, son of William Macon Sr. (Garrett Dillahunt), in the series. There are rumors that one of the two men could become the DC villain Black Hand.

Though initially many were making comparisons between this and “True Detective,” indications are the series will be a lighter affair than is probably expected.

Ritter’s character is dubbed “a good-looking charmer who does his father’s bidding. Capitalising on his family’s reputation, he clings to his small-town ego and has everything to lose.”

The cast also includes Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Kelly Macdonald as the enigmatic Sheriff Kerry, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, and Nicole Ari Parker and Sherman Augustus as John Stewart’s parents.
