The incident took place during Green Day’s huge headline set at the California festival this weekend (Saturday April 12). During the end of the pop-punk pioneers’ set in Indio, numerous fireworks were set off and flew into the air.

While most of them went upwards and exploded over the huge main stage, one went off course and flew directly into the audience. In footage captured by one festival-goer, which was shared on social media shortly afterwards, the firework is seen headed back into the crowd and setting a nearby palm tree on fire.

“A firework just exploded next to me and all my friends at Coachella,” they wrote in the caption shared to X/Twitter. “I can’t hear out of my right ear, multiple people hurt. That was fucking insane, I thought it was a terrorist attack.”

It isn’t yet clear how many people were injured by the rogue firework, nor the extent of the injuries sustained by those involved. Find the footage of the moment below.

For their headline set over the weekend, Billie Joe Armstrong and co. used their performance to comment on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This included the frontman changing the lyrics in ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ to “Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine/Tales from another broken home,” replacing the original line, “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimised.”

They also invited a few fans on stage, with one named Brooke joining Armstrong for a duet of ‘Know Your Enemy’, and another later playing guitar for ‘Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)’.

Since the set, some Green Day fans have taken to social media to criticise Charli XCX after she was seen sporting a “Miss should be headliner” sash at an afterparty. This came as some interpreted it as a dig at the headlining trio.

Elsewhere at Coachella, Lady Gaga performed a theatrical five-act set, A. G. Cook brought out Danny Brown – performing a host of tracks before remixing Charli XCX’s ‘Party 4 U’.

Charli XCX then brought out Lorde, Billie Eilish and Troye Sivan for her highly-awaited performance, and there was controversy during Kneecap‘s set after they led an anti-Margaret Thatcher chant, with fans reporting the online stream had cut out shortly after.
